The Team

Albertus Bekker

Albertus is the resident luthier of Bekker Music. He has been playing the violin all his life and has been a member of many orchestras, among them the Rand Symphony Orchestra. He has also been building, repairing, and restoring instruments of the violin family since 2000. Some of his instruments are owned and played by renowned soloists and orchestral musicians, such as Zanta Hofmeyr, Serge Cuca, Maretha Uys (Assistant Concert Master of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra), and Vaughan Mcley.

Albertus received training in Italy from renowned masters, such as Hans Nebel, Raymond Schryer, Joe Robson, and Renato Scrollavezza.

Apart from building bespoke instruments, he has made it his mission to provide higher-quality yet affordable entry-level instruments for the children and musicians of South Africa. In 2024, he visited several violin factories and identified a family-owned facility with which to forge a long-term relationship. Their instruments are sold under the Bekker Music label.

Emma Bekker

Emma Bekker is an entrepreneur, educator, published author and poet and passionate conservationist. She has worked with several of South Africa’s renowned musicians and producers on a variety of music related productions for stage and television. She was the owner of a highly successful somatic and therapeutic practice before changing gears to join Bekker Music as public relations coordinator and human relations manager. She has also been serving as a director on the board of the Witkoppen Land Owners’ Association for the past eight years. Her commitment to creating a legacy, improving public knowledge about stringed instruments and supporting the performing arts are some of reasons which excites her about being part of the Bekker Music team.

Pirow Bekker

Pirow Bekker is the eldest son of Albertus and Emma and rounds out the reach of the team. He also plays the violin. He obtained an honours degree in Genetics and Microbiology from Wits and spent a decade in the brewing industry, winning multiple awards including Best Beer in Africa in 2019. After completing an IMDP Postgraduate Diploma at GIBS, he applied his skills in consulting across multiple industries. He conceptualises and runs Lore Table: a pop-up culinary experience that explores the intersection of enjoyment of lore and food through themed sittings in curated locations. Pirow believes in the potential of the next generation of musicians and aims to drive Bekker Music to create ideal opportunities for them to truly express their souls with worthy instruments.
